THE ONLY OPTIONS FOR BUYING A HANG ARE:

<b><u>HOW TO BUY A NEW HANG DIRECTLY FROM PANART</b></u>

The current process to buy a new Hang is to <b>write or fax a letter</b> to Sabina and Felix, the Hang makers and book an appointment to visit them at their workshop or to get a Hang shipped out to you.
The problem is that there are no spaces now until 2010.

Writing a letter requires a lot of PATINECE - Felix and Sabine do read every letter they receive and they will respond accordingly in time. YOu may get a standard letter of reply which will state that you are in the line and they will contact you again with regards to organising a visit to the Bern Hanghaus or to arrange payment and have it shipped to you.

New price is around 1200 Euros though it does seem to flucuate slightly, maybe depending on the exact insturment's qualities and the applicants ability to pay full price - plus shipping costs.

<b><u>SECOND-HAND</b></u>
Second hand market is strongly contested - expect to pay up to $6,000 for a second-hand instrument - Euro 5000 in Europe.
They occassionally come up on E-Bay but its not a common event. There's probably been around 8 or 9 in the last year or so.
IN September, two Hanghang sold for $8,000 each, $10,000 is the highest recorded 2nd-hand price - making the market rather prohibitive.

However, they seem to have dropped in the interim, one recently sold for Euro 2,500.

The best I can say is, keep the faith, write your nice letter/fax and hope for the best.

Simply because I haven't had anyone report that they have had a reply to a fax, so I'd rather not report that until someone has success.

If Sabina and Felix only want very well off people to buy and play a hang then they are clearly succeeding.
£750 for the instrument plus the trip to Switzerland and the time off from work is a rather expensive proposition.
The hang is calling my name but its makers have made it a very exclusive object (feel free to see all the worse connotations of the word exclusive as they are intended).
£4000 for a second hand instrument?
The temptation to sell must be quite strong.
Am I the only one that sees a lot of ugliness in what used to be an exquisite object? It’s not too late to do something about this sorry situation.

Hi Wando,

Genuine concerns that have been hotly debated between this forum and others. I do not think it is the intention of Felix and Sabina to create an "exclusive" community per se. they are just two people that are honing their craft and felt themselves being overwhelmed by worldwide demand. Their decision to pare down production and concentrate on perfecting the instrument, rather than mass producing it, was moreso for self-preservation both of their business and their sanity. I believe they tried stepping up production by bringing in apprentices, but unfortunately, that did not work out so well.

Believe me, if they could produce instruments for all who wanted, they probably would. But that's not the case. However, there are companies in the U.S. that are getting ready to release there own versions of the Hang. One is Pantheon Steel in the St. Louis area of the U.S. If you email kyle@pantheonsteel.com, you can get on the waiting list for when they are ready. The one thing about Kyle that stands out amongst all the newer manufacturers, is that he is a steel pan tuner by trade. He has years of experience working the metal and making tone come from it. Other companies are relying too much on technology to get them to that step. Of course this is just my opinion that this is a major factor. But I've spoken to Kyle personally, and even sent him my own Hang to study for a couple weeks. At this point the general idea is to have set standard models, with specific or custom tunings available upon request. You can order and place a deposit down, and when your instrument is ready, send him the balance, and HE WILL SHIP your instrument to you! So, no more worries about travelling expenses etc. Or the fear of paying out the nose for a second hand Hang....as his prices will be comparable, if not less than a new Hang from the Hang Haus.  Exciting things are happening this year for the Hang community..... so don't despair my friend. All will be well.

I hope this lends some encouragement to you. Don't hate the creators for the path they have chosen to take their business down. And know that more opportunities lie in the near future!

As are we all my friend, as are we all. But again, I think that the current situation will be quelled this year. The spike in prices on the secondary market obviously reflect the demand. But with other manufacturers offering quality instruments soon, demand will definitely be shifted away from the secondary market. I can't wait to see what happens this year. Can I just add that in terms of having to wait for an instrument the waiting list for a hang is considerably shorter than many handmade orchestral instruments, and the price is very competitive. For example new handmade viols will set you back upwards of 4000 gbp, and I have just put my name on a waiting list for a top-quality steel pan which I am not expecting to receive until the middle of 2009. Many instrument makers have waiting lists that stretch for years.

I was really impressed by Hang instrument. As I understand it's
not so easy to buy Hang and it's not a cheap instrument too.
I've found few anolog models. I think you know them: Hapi, Happy,
1tone, milltone, etc

They are a cheaper and easier to buy them. But I think Hang sounds
more tuneful and better. It' s hard understand when you can touch it
and listen..

I want to know your opinion. I'm right here or no? Do you no that
analogs. Do you like Hang more tan them?

Hello!
I am new to this forum but I have traked the hang for about a year now. I have been reading alot of info of how to get one and so on but I have not send PanArt an letter yet. My question for this post is that Danny had some info about a new guy in US that had study an panArt hang and trying to make on of hes own. That was some years from now and im wodering how this has turned out. Was it a succes or is he still not finished?  And is there some one here that have a clue on how long the waiting list for a hang is now?
