just wanted to let you guys know about a song i just got done mixing.  it was originally recorded with just guitar and tabla improv then i went back in and added other percussion, including the hang.  have a check when you get a chance     smile  i called it Aisle of Thought

I am planning to put up a load of samples and graphical explanations of mics and positions to experiment a little with this.
Hopefully the next couple of months will let me do a nice full review of lots of mics and positions, so keep your eyes open.

Otherwise, good quality condensors are probably always the way to go.  Stereo imaging is especially important, so a left and right mic and perhaps two directional mics for the ding and centre of mix, one above and one below.

However, this is only what I imagine would work well and I've not had a chance to try them out yet, but have heard a few artists who obviously realised a good stereo image added to the intamacy and depth of the recording.

I've got access to some AKG, Neumann, Shure and Audio-Technica condensor mics, so a relatively broad range to test with.

I own a Shure KSM32 Condensor and Red Audio 5 RC-10 (a cheap range mic like Rode).

Can't wait to do it, just need a clear day to play around....

Hey guys, I am from Atlanta, I love the djembe and the  didgeridoo although I don't realy know how to play them. I did take a few classes on my djembe but once he started talking
numbers and 2 ka's and 3 ta's I lost it. I like listening to music and then going by the beat which I know is incorect. But were not all perfect now are we. I am an artist who is currently
taking some classes in Atlanta GA called the Creative Circus. Anyway I stumbled upon this video and it was love at first site. I hope I can meet some kindred.

Good info, thanx a lot!! I'd like to know more about recording and miking techniques for the Hang Drum, as this is part of a final project I have to do to get a technical degree on sound engineering. I'm trying to write a "how to" recording guide" fpr the Hang Drum, referencing mic position, ambience, etc.

I suspect you might be the man to do the ultimate research!

have you got access to a Hang or own one?

If so, why not try some different things and let us know the results?

I'd be well up for knowing how you got on - though I suspect you'd need top quality stuff to reference on if you were truly going to get a useful representation of the depth of sound available, not to mention some shite-hot mics.

However, depending on 'that' which you are trying to achieve, it may be possible to get a good reflection of the way the Hang resonates (or fans) its sound out.

The older research papers give plenty of detail on how the hang Resonates as a Body of metal and the Internal Relationships between The Chosen Few notes, but sadly very little on the behaviour of the sound around and from the hang externally - much like the patterns relating to fields and directions of sensitivity with microphones. I imagine there's a lot more going on than (doesn't) meets the eye.

Good luck with the research - let me know.

Been a while since my last post.

I finished my research project about a month ago. I did record a Hang Drum (a Gudu Hang serial number 3376). Here´s a video I shot during session:

Used standard studio mics: (pair of Rode NT5 in ORTF configuration, SM94 & AKG C414 in M/S, spaced pair of Shure PG81 and SM57 ponting at the gu). Recorded in dry room (a little ambient noise was unavoidable).
