In 2006 I was in India with my wife and children, not my first or last visit, but definitely the one that I shall remember most. I’d put my family to bed and gone for a walk along the beach near the village when I first heard the most beautiful sounds weaving through the coconut groves. Like a moth to the flame I traced the sound to a fire where the source was revealed. At this point my life was split into two parts – before and after hearing the hang. I stared as though I were perving on someones beautiful girlfriend who i just wanted to be alone with for an hour. What was ‘her’ name? Would I get to hold her? What would she feel like? Would she sound so happy in my hands? Two days later I saw the gentleman who had been playing it on the beach, and he enlightened me as to the history. I forget his name but he said he knew the hang makers and we talked a lot after that, although he knew all I wanted from him was to play his beloved hang. The day before I was leaving to go on a trip to the centre of India he offered me the instrument to play. Although the sounds I was creating were nowhere near as complex and beautiful as his, to me they sounded exquisite. I’ve dreamt of owning one since. On my return from India I immediately contacted the site, which I think at the time was www.hang.ch (where is it now), but the holding page stated that no further hangs were being made at that time. Then we had another child and life got busy and I had no time to think about India and the hang – until now.
My name is Peter. I am a 36year old Scottish sound engineer living in London and have been playing guitar for some years and play around with various bits of percussion. Yet something happened when I played the hang – I felt I had found my reason for being in India. I felt that the other instruments that I have struggled to play throughout my life were simply steps on the way to my finding the hang. And now that I have found the hang the real quest begins. Well, I am a man with simple tastes and wants – and I have patience.
The hang I ran into in Patnem was, I think, of Dorian scale in the key of G, which made it very easy for guitars to play along with. I am aware that there is a long wait but I will wait. What Sabina and Felix have created I dream about regularly. Still the letter has been sent now all their is to do is wait.......
