tuning hang drums is not for the feint hearted....i can bang my central note (ding) back to pitch with my hand if it goes out a tiny bit ...but i dont fancy my chances of a proper retune with a hammer!

anyone up for the challenge?  maybe ask felix if he will sell you some hang blanks to practice tuning?

maybe i will ask him......

Re: pantastic

Having watched Sabine do it to two of my hangs, I kind of get the feeling that you have to get the feeling!
The knocks were not dainty taps, they were serious klopfs...I think the position of where you hit is most likely of paramount importance.

I have a duff note on my Shang Diao, so I'm going to get a video camera, a nice hammery type thing similar to what Sabine used, and make a fool of myself in front of the whole world!

Stay tuned to TV Plonker!

Re: pantastic

I had fun with mine. Takes a few blows before you get over the shock of actually banging your Hang with a hammer. Got my note back, but the resonance is partially gone. Works for now, til I either work on it myself again, or send it in for a proper retune.

Re: pantastic

My buddy is heading over in the next couple of weeks to get them retuned. Don't think I'll be able to go, so he'll be taking mine. I'll get him to video the process and I'll post it up when it's done.

Re: pantastic

about the blanks idea...............?  a chap named bill (caisabill) said he was offered pre pressed blanks by felix some years ago....we could ask for 20 or so for the uk.... then we could distribute a few each and do some experimenting....! shouldnt cost a fortune if Panart are willing wink

Re: pantastic

A mate of mine got his "Ding" stuffed up !!

Cant' see the hammer option,to force full for my taste.

What is with heat ?  Will it remember where it was? Any clue's beside a Hammer ?

Re: pantastic

Heat only expands and contracts the metal and affects the tuning minimally (at least when you are TRYING to tune). The Hammer is about the only way to go. I tuned my Hang.... though not the ding. And it was very hard for me to get used to the fact I was actually using a hammer on my Hang. My F went out, actually almost became a perfect E, so I didn't catch it quite that fast. I got my F back, but the resonance is a bit lost. Being the amateur that I am, it suits my needs for now, but eventually I want to send it back to Bern ( or Pantheon Steel in the States) for a proper retune.
