Topic: Hang drum Appeal for Autistic Boy

We have a son aged 9 who has been playing the drums since the age of 18 months. He is self taught on both the bongos, jembe, congas and full drum kit. He caused quite a stir and a standing ovation when at the age of 7 he played drums at the Royal College of Music. The head of the percussion department, music professor at said college, was genuinely astounded, and had never heard anything quite like it. So far it all sounds pretty amazing....
...now here is the flip side of being a musical prodigy, its called Autism. His amazing ability is the outcome of his disability!!
For all intents and purposes he looks very much like a normal 9 yr old boy, but his social skills and communication skills are severely impaired. For him the world is a very confusing, chaotic and frightening place. He struggles to interpret and make sense of his environment and communicating thoughts and feelings is hugely frustrating for him. He struggles to learn at school and experiences bullying and/or teasing on a daily basis by his peers.
For him, drums are more than just a musical instrument. They are his only means of communicating and releasing his unexpressed thoughts and feelings. When he plays, the drums become an extension of himself and he is fully absorbed in his own world.
Last year my husband and I visited Belgium's Jazz music Festival. We were drawn and mesmerised by a beautiful sound. We followed the sound and it led us to its source. There we found a man sat on the ground playing an instrument we had never seen or heard until now. I knew at that moment that we had found an instrument that could help our son in ways that no other instrument could. It was as if it had been designed for him, and I knew that he would play it instinctively without needing to be shown how! He had that first opportunity at the Hangout convention last summer, and played a Hang beautifully. I'd never seen him so relaxed and at peace. Sadly, it is probably unlikely that he will ever get to own a Hang and demonstrate its incredible theraputic benefits to other autistic children. We have searched but bidding prices are well beyond our reach...is there anyone out there who would consider selling one at a reasonable price?
For all those who might doubt the sincerity of our appeal (and understandably, there are those who will), we have provided a youtube link of our son Josiah playing the Hang at the Hangout 2010. There are also other links of him completely improvising, playing a full drum kit. We can also provide medical evidence from the Neurological center at Great Ormond street hospital for children in London, and details of the professor involved in his case.
They have noted his incredible gifting as a percussionist and agree that it can only be explained by the nature of his condition and his need to express himself non-verbally. We can also gain written confirmation of his natural ability on percussion from a Jembe/drum teacher who visits his school and heard him play. He said he had never heard anything like it!!!
I think the best evidence is in meeting Josiah and hearing him/seeing him incredibly connect with the Hang.
We are more than happy for the makers at PANArt to meet Josiah, and his dad is prepared to take him to Bern,Switzerland, along with any evidence they might require. We would also be prepared to return the instrument to the original owner/maker as we have no intention of financially profiting from something that is solely intended to enrich the life of and be a holistic aid to our son, and possibly others like him(he has three other siblings also diagnosed with autism). How can one place a price on something that can reach him, on a level in ways that nothing else can, and allows him to express feelings that he cannot otherwise express or communicate???
