Topic: Exclusivity
Hi to all,
First, a little story about how I found this forum. I was walking along a beach in Raglan, New Zealand and walked past someone playing what I later discovered was a Hang. I love to listen and dance to music, but have never found an instrument I have wanted to learn before. Upon hearing these lovely melodic percussion sounds I instantly felt like I had found an instrument I would like to learn, which has never happened before except for a brief flirtation with a guitar.
After a lot of searching on the internet to find out what instrument I had heard, I am very disappointed to find that this instrument is hugely expensive and appears to be an exclusive 'club' which requires all sorts of pre-requisites to be able to get hold of?
I simply want to be able to order an affordable hang style drum, and learn it in my own space. Are there any similar sounding alternatives I could try?
Thanks, Ash

I have just read http://www.hangblog.org/2006/11/27/how-to-buy-a-hang/ and I see now its not through choice or snobbery that hangs are so scarce, and more due to the fact demand is far exceeding supply. Nowhere have I found anywhere discussing resolving this for the future though? The current system of having to visit Switzerland is clearly inadequate.
