Topic: Exclusivity

Hi to all,

First, a little story about how I found this forum. I was walking along a beach in Raglan, New Zealand and walked past someone playing what I later discovered was a Hang. I love to listen and dance to music, but have never found an instrument I have wanted to learn before. Upon hearing these lovely melodic percussion sounds I instantly felt like I had found an instrument I would like to learn, which has never happened before except for a brief flirtation with a guitar.

After a lot of searching on the internet to find out what instrument I had heard, I am very disappointed to find that this instrument is hugely expensive and appears to be an exclusive 'club' which requires all sorts of pre-requisites to be able to get hold of?

I simply want to be able to order an affordable hang style drum, and learn it in my own space. Are there any similar sounding alternatives I could try?

Thanks, Ash

*edit*

I have just read http://www.hangblog.org/2006/11/27/how-to-buy-a-hang/ and I see now its not through choice or snobbery that hangs are so scarce, and more due to the fact demand is far exceeding supply. Nowhere have I found anywhere discussing resolving this for the future though? The current system of having to visit Switzerland is clearly inadequate.

Re: Exclusivity

i hear you AshR,

you are not alone with your frustrations.

-there are at least 2 other companies that claim to be making similar style instruments but as yet nothing remotely close has materialised.

felix and sabina (thats the makers of hang) spend hours and hours  over a period of some months working on each instrument. one hang cannot be made in 1 day. batches are produced in stages over many weeks to get the sounds that make them special.

panart (felix and sabina) have published all the science relating to the production of these instruments but as yet no one else is selling them.

check back to this page regularly or the forum at hang-music.com for latest news and hang for sale.

theres no snobbery or elitism its just that 2 people cannot make 'em any faster so some people who are waiting get very p####d off

good luck with your search

Re: Exclusivity

I didn't get to talk to the chap, just walked past him playing. He seemed really engrossed in the music so I didn't want to disturb him. This was around May this year smile
