Hey guys and welcome to the wonderful yet slightly frustrating world of the Hang.
Difficult to get hold of is true, impossible, not really! all you need is patience and a bit of money... the Hang costs around €1200 new direct from PANart... who unfortunately for those about to embark on getting one, have just gone into a year long research and development phase in their production. This means that there will not be any Hang for sale throughout 2009 but we are hopeful that they will start production again in early 2010.
For now, all you can do is send them a letter expressing your interest in buying a Hang, personally i would not recommend anything from eBay, its a buyers market but unfortunately some people are getting a little greedy and sticking their Hang up for silly starting prices of like $20,000... its ridiculous but then if someone wants to buy it, it's there for the taking (or the price of a nice family car!)
Hang started life costing around £200 a piece, the price rise from the manufacturer PANart has increased over the last 5 or 6 years to around £900 each, largely due to the nature of time it takes to produce and the evolution of the instrument over the year.
They started by producing many scale of Hang 40+ to be precise all of which can be heard on the Odd music website. Alas now they only make one scale, called the Integral Hang, it's a beautiful, soft and responsive Hang that is the product of many years of research and development into the sound scape of steel.
One thing to be wary of with eBay is that PANart will not retune, repair or entertain anyone who has bought a Hang off of eBay where it was sold for profit.
Each hang comes with a serial number, they pretty much know the whereabouts and owner of each Hang out there and will know if the Hang is sold.. they obviously know the sale price they soold it for too, so a Hang that cost £300 to begin with that now appears on eBay for £10,000 is a complete rip off for the buyer and so PANart took the stance that no Hang would be repaired by them should it be sold for profit.
A statement that has got a lot of people very verbally active over the last few months, some agree, some disagree that PANart should be able to control the after market of the Hang but either way it's PANarts decision.
For anyone interested in learning more about the Hang, myself and fellow forum dweller Rob run the annual HangOut weekend in Farnham, Surrey each September, a place to come and learn, play, interact and enjoy Hang with many likeminded folk from literally all over the world www.hangoutuk.co.uk for some it's the only chance they will get for a couple of years of getting close to a Hang.
Another possible option coming out soon is the Halo by Pantheon Steel (www.pantheonsteel.com). A US based steel pan maker and tuner has created his own version of the Hang, called the Halo. It will be cheaper than the Hang to buy (stateside) but will be ready for unveiling sometime in 2009 (we hope).
It could be a good option for those that can't wait for the real PANart Hang although I do know that Kyle's list of people requesting one is growing daily, already at least a 6 months waiting list... still significantly less than PANart's.
Whatever path you choose to owning a Hang, welcome to the forum, welcome to the Hang world and please do check out all the forum members videos out there on YouTube!
Cheers
