Topic: The Parisian Connection

It was Summer 2005, we were in France, bordering Haute-Marne and the Champagne regions, living in a converted library bus, in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, in some of the most scary, violent and amazing thunderstorms known to man. We left pretty pronto for Paris...

When we got there, we met and stayed with a friend who had spent a while in the UK and  was working and living in Paris again. He welcomed us, and told us of his friend who had spent 5 years converting a huge 60 metre river barge (don't think of UK canal boats - this thing lived on the Seine and was bloody huge).

We visited and it was truly amazing - beautiful woodwork, meticulous attention to detail, a nice kitchen/bar and cinema screen - fantastic! However, it didn't take long before our mate beamed at us mischievously as he drew his Hang into our visual range...tap tap, dung, dang off he went....

We were of course gob-smacked, but to add to the moment, we drank champagne, watched ducks float past at head height, played guitar, bongos and were merry!!

From that moment on, I swore I had to get a Hang. It took me two months from the UK distributor and I paid £350. If I'd have thought/known about their limited production, I'd have had ten of them!!!

Anyway, I never looked back, and it took another 18 months to get a second MK2 hang, at the same time as 3 friends getting one too - this time direct from Bern.

Thanks to my friend in Paris for one of the most exciting introductions ever!

Re: The Parisian Connection

Winter 2005  - I had been living in Thailand for over two years, having previously been living in India, where I studied bansuri.  a busker here (Christopher of the Wolves) had really impressed me with his street act - trance inducing atmospheres created with Didge, Djembe, gongs and mystical Hulusi... I invited him round for a jam... he kept going on about a new instrument he was just about to recieve - what new instrument I wondered - he doesn't need anything else! So the guy turns up at my place with this strange looking metal UFO... then he started to play... Wow Oh Wow! What a jam that was! Autumn 2006 I was back in UK, working as a carpenter in London, spending all my cash on studio gear to bring back to Thailand - I had thought to look for a Hang - I had no idea how difficult it is to find one, I knew they were expensive, so I left it til last, til I had earned more money. Just a couple of weeks before my return flight I decided to google it... started reading posts on hang-music.com and suddenly I realised just how rare they are... gulp... I'd been to oddmusic.com and listened to all the scales - Ake Bono sang to me like the sirens at the base of Mount Kailash, and there it was, on hang-music forum, fruitmusic wanted to sell his Ake Bono. I reistered immediately, got the guys phone number by email and called him. By wonderful coincidence a French friend was crashing in the garded shed of the same house where I occupied the sofa - fruitmusic hardly spoke any English (he's french) - we made a deal at 11pm the same day. My french friend had a cash stash of euros which he loaned me - I was up all night packing etc - 6am the next morning I was on the bus to Paris - 24 hours later I was back in London with my Hang, less than a week after my initial internet search. And what a time I had in Paris! Thankyou, Fruitmusic! I have a simple webpage - it hasn't been updated since it was first built over two years ago  - still havent even got all the thumbnails up there, nor any of the new music - but there is a track of some of that original jam with Christopher - its called "You're the Leader"...

Re: The Parisian Connection

I have just discovered the hang drum today through some online videos on youtube etc. I can't (or probably don't need to) tell you quite how amazing I find these drums! I have a djembe which I got in Africa and I find that quite theraputic/hypontic to play but WOW would I love to get hold of a hang drum. From what I have read it looks like I'm going to have a hard time getting hold of one but I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I might one day stumble accross one. or wait until I am feeling rich enough to spend $6000 on ebay for one... hmmm

Well a big shout out to all the hang drum players and fans out there, I'm glad to have stumbled accross this fascinatin instrument and can't wait to hear one in real life, as it were...

Re: The Parisian Connection

HI John,
Welcome to Hangfan and I know how it feels to be entranced by one of these things!
If you're in the UK, why not come along to the Hang Out Convention in a few weeks time? It the perfect place to meet up with the UK crowd and get your mitts on a real Hang and have a play.
More info here: http://www.hangfan.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?id=22

It would be lovely to meet you if you could make it. You may, however, be somewhere completely different in the world!

There's nothing to stop you writing a letter to Felix and Sabine and seeing if you can book a slot with them next year to go over - assuming you can save up the cash for the trip by then.

Otherwise, take care and good luck on finding one.
T.

Re: The Parisian Connection

Hey there John, welcome to the world of the Hang. I understand the emotions behind first seeing/hearing the Hang. Now of course, you've a little taste of the frustration as well. The Hang universe is at a strange place right now. It's at the precipice of something great, but could easily just go over the edge and be done with. Patience is the one thing that binds the community as a whole at the moment, and patience is getting harder and harder to justify. Don't take my tone as negative, by any means.... but realize that you'll sooner be frustrated rather than satisfied.... in the short term. But if you stick it out, you just might find yourself with yourvery own Hang.

Good luck to you new friend!

Peace! wink

Re: The Parisian Connection

I too first witnessed the hang on youtube this morning. They featured a clip and Im sure a whole new wave of fans were born! I was instantly hooked...my 15 month old son and I fell in love with the Hang at the same time. We just sat there in a trance...watching video after beautiful video of the magical instrument.  Every hour since has been wrapped up in finding out more about them...and with that the frustration mounts. It has become a new goal of mine though...to find my Hang.

I would love to write a letter to Felix and Sabine...do you know the address? Time to start saving up for the pilgramage.

So glad to find this site..and I will be visiting often.

THanks!

Re: The Parisian Connection

I first discovered the Hand on the web site "oddmusic.com".

I was just browsing the many unusual musical instruments and came across a Hang. Of course the first thing that intrigued me was it's looks but once I listened to the sound file I had to have one. With the help of Ron Kravits I owned a Gu Du Hang in about four months. It was the last shipment of Hanghang to the USA.

Unfortunately about a year later I ran into serious financial trouble and ended up selling it for $1300.00. I have regretted it ever since. I only hope that someday I will once again have the joy of owning one, (or more), again.

Re: The Parisian Connection

I first came across this strange flying saucer of enchantment when I was i rushing thru richmond in London on the way to catch a flight from heathrow. My boyfriend at the time had to pull me away because I was completely mezmorized by the magical etheral sounds coming from this steel drum looking instrument. i never had a chance to talk to the busker and I didnt even know what that flying saucer was that completely entranced me for those few moments where time seemed to stop and all of richmond fell away leaving me and the music to share a magical experience. It wasnt until months later when this guy was visiting a friend of mine in belfast and he was a busker who made a living traveling with his hang. he let me play it and I instantly had to have one. I heard that the waiting list was 2 years and this guy didnt even know how to get on it. He had bought his hang in a music shop in switzerland when they were still being circulated to the public. After much seaching on the internet I found out the formula for getting a hang. A hand written letter to Bern and then alot of waiting. Its been almost a year and I am due to receive this years integral 2008 hang by mail in the next couple weeks. Ive spent my entire bank account on it but I know it will be worth it.

Re: The Parisian Connection

It truly will. wink

Re: The Parisian Connection

Ah yeah... worth it, i'd bankrupt myself again too if I had the chance all over again. Its a great instrument and will bring you much pleasure in playing.

Welcome to the world of the Hang

Re: The Parisian Connection

Oh yeah... my story! Errrmmm 2004 I think? may have been 2003... was at Didje Fest in Devon, UK and a band from the Netherlands were playing on stage, one of them had this strange UFO on the stage, at the beginning of the set the player introduced it as the Hong and then started playing... I was hooked.

On getting home from the fest I looked up the Hong and found very little info on the net about it, some scales in Oddmusic and a couple of blogging sites but that was pretty much it... I then forgot about it and it wasn't until the Didje Gathering in May 2006 that a guy called Tall Paul (didje maker here in the UK) arrived at the festival with one.... he let me have a play on it and that was it I was hooked.... Obsessed would be another word some friends might use.

Either way I had to have one and I was hell bent on getting one.... alas in April that year world wide distribution had ceased and Knock on Wood the only UK distribution point had sole their last one two weeks before I called.

The only thing left was to email PANart, yes they used to answer emails back in the day smile so I sent them an email begging, pleading and selling my soul to just be able to get my hands on one of these instruments... I knew the scale I was after... Pentatonic F

I got a reply back from Sabina.... I kept it and here it is below

"Welcome to Hangbauhaus in Bern, Switzerland

After 5 years of experience with the Hang and its music, the Hangmakers are no longer working with various standard models, but are creating their own instruments. These creations are based on our knowledge of the acoustical properties of the resonance body, our studies of scales and our musical experience. Each Hang is a unique work of art. We don`t ship them.

Hangbauhaus

In Hangbauhaus, PANArt`s new workshop space, Sabina Schärer and Felix Rohner, the two Hangmakers, create their Hang instruments. After the treatment of the raw material and tuning, the hanghang are brought down to the Hanghaus, by the riverside.

Hanghaus

In this old wooden building, where the Hang was born in January of 2000, our guests can play the instruments in a quiet atmosphere. If you would like to spend a night at the Hanghaus, there is a guestroom with a kitchen.

Bern

Bern is a beautiful city, dating from the middle ages.Major train routes, including the TGV, the Euro-City and the Cisalpino pass through Bern several times a day. Hanghaus sits on the bank of the river Aare, 20 minutes walk from the main station. Bern is also reachable by road from all directions. If you have enough time, you can visit the famous Alps, only an hour`s travel from Bern."

Sad I know, but its my story of how I got my hang and  kept everything.

Anyway the words that killed me were We don`t ship them you may have noticed them at the end of the first paragraph... I was gutted.

So I stepped up my pleading as there was no way I could get to Switzerland for one, my wife and I had just welcomed our baby boy into the world so not only were finances tight but so was getting away from the chains of fatherhood... I was now trapped, tied to the house with a screaming child and wife! (love you sweetheart smile)

So another email was sent and the reply I got was that they would be willing to get me a Hang but could someone come in my place to collect it... I had a breakthrough... I knew of a chap in Switzerland from the Didje scene, so I contacted him. after some more pleading and praying he finally agrees to collect one for me, I offer of course to pay all his expenses for the trip of 50 miles to Bern from his homw town.

Then out of the blue I get an email from Sabina

"Hello Kelly,
I have a new option for you. Someone brought back a hang in a pentatonic F tuning, a very nice hang.
We could send it to you directly, so you don`t have to send your friend to us. And once you are in switzerland you pass by and see the new hang.

Please let me know soon what you think about it, then we can send it to you.
regards
Sabina "

HOW CHUFFED DO YOU THINK I WAS.... very, very indeed.... I got my Hang like it was some strange twist in fate that the Penta F turned up just before my mate was about go... literally a day or two.

Never looked back ever since, I love my Hang and my Hang loves me... its a mutual relationship with much Ding love.

So, sorry if I bored you but that was my story of how I found the Hang.

Kelly

Re: The Parisian Connection

nice kelly nice, my story is a lot shorter:

Heard the hang at the didge fests and actually thought OMG whats that it sounds bad but soon learnt its not the hang its the person playing it, then Kel got his hang I loved it went with him to the hang gathering at torbz's place in nov 2006 where F and S were there with a hang for sale which i managed to get my hands on woooooooooooooooooooooooooooot, but i had an hour to find £400 before i had to leave so to ensure the hang was mine, and with the help of my credit card and a lift from kel to the town i got the cash and went home with my hang smile

was weird though because previous to the hang gathering i said to kel I will get one mate deffo and then we went to the hang gathering and i did not even think they would have a hang for sale, when F and S turned up with a hang everyone was very excited and many people wanted it but i think i asked first and was one of the people who did not have a hang and also felix was aware that there were many hanghang in the glastonbury area and that kind of influenced his decision, but what a feeling when F sat by me in the morning while nursing a hangover and said he wanted me to have the hang if i could get the cash asap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow and michael colley all that night had said it was mine but i did not have his faith but i should have smile

So I went to the hang gathering with no hang and no hope for one and left on cloud nine in shock with a hang in tow smile what a weekend smile and its weird coz i can say that my hang found me lol

Re: The Parisian Connection

The first time I saw a Hang, I was cruising through some site, DIGG I think it was, and came across a video , "Man Plays UFO Drum". I was hooked. Obssessed more like it. I spent the next several days tracking anything I could about what I finally found out was called a Hang. I ran into all the dead ends, and the realizations that this was not just something I could order and have. It became a quest!

I finally happened upon Music in the Moment and Ron Kravitz. I sent an email and received a message a bit later to add my phone number if I was interested. Within a day or so Ron called me and told me that he was an Artist's agent that occasionally had the opportunity to go to Bern and bring back an unspecified number of Hanghang back to the US. Of course the waiting list was tremendously long, and I was told I could get on a list, for another list. My heart sank. Months I thought, perhaps years! My obsession waned over the next couple weeks.

Then, I received the magical phone call. It was Ron. He said that he was leaving for Bern within a few days and as circumstances had worked out, he had one Hang available to bring back to me. MY eyes lit up!!! But then the nasty realization.... the money. The price in November 2006 was a tad over $1500 for a Hang, it's hardcase and carry case. Now being the family man that I am, and a small business owner.... every penny counts. And my dearest wife reminded me of this daily. But we had recently refinanced our home, with intentions towards home improvement. So I had to convince my wife, that this was indeed a life changing investment. It was a hard sell, one that even saw me out of the house for a short period! But all is well now.

The next month was torturous. "Has my Hang arrived in the States yet?", "When will it be shipped to ME?"..... Unbearable anticipation!!!!! Then Ron called again. He was back in Philly and the Hanghang would arrive soon. He told me at that point he would call me and let me hear them all and be able to decide which Hang I wanted. I was so anxious I told him to send me ANY Hang! But I am glad that I had the opportunity to choose. It wasn't quite the Hang Haus, but being afforded a choice is a golden opportunity.

I chose #428, A Bb C D E F A - D ding. It was the first I heard, and it spoke to me the clearest. When it was on it's way, I tracked it's every move. As soon as I saw that it was delivered, I dropped everything at my shop and ran to get it. It was beautiful! But when I first tried to play it, I thought it was broken! Thud! Thud! But then I learned the touch. Aahhhhhhh the beautiful music! The tones!!!!! At that point I became a new student. I have been studying ever since. The Hang has truly changed my life and set me down a path that I've not yet really determined the destination of. But it seems it will be exciting. At the very least, the music will be nice! smile

Re: The Parisian Connection

I can firmly remember the excitment of waiting for my Hang to arrive... I know where you're at and its the best feeling in the world!

May I suggest a day at home when it arrives... mine arived in the morning before work and I spent the longest day at work of my life that day! dying to get home to get my mitts on it.

Have you played a Hang before?  if not then use light fingers and tap at the tonal circles... As Danny said above he thought his was broke when it arrive, I thought mine was rubbish too, but I was hitting it too hard and leaving my hands on the steel for too long so the sound was being dampened.

I think someone once mentioned playing it like a Tabla, firm but quick taps with the fingers..... Oh the sweet music.

Have fun... I just know you will smile

Re: The Parisian Connection

I'm in Australia... do I have the faintest chance of ever attaining one of these magnificent instruments? sad  hey resonantbeauty... how are you getting yours?

Re: The Parisian Connection

You have every chance of getting hold of one, PANart are now shipping the instruments again but you have to be on the list to recieve one. They offer you the chance to go to Bern to collect in person or to have the Hang shipped to you... they are getting quite pricey nowadays though at €1200 plus your postage on top.

Get your letter in the post and then await your reply... be be aware they will probably bulk respond later in the year for 2009, so you may not hear anything for several months.

Re: The Parisian Connection

January 2006 walking along Patnem beach in southern Goa at night when I hear what sounds like orbital doing an acoustic set from the palm groves. sitting around a fire jamming is this dude playing this crazy looking instrument. I really got hooked very quickly - what was it, where do i get one, how hard is it to make it sound as good as he was. I was convinced this was my reason for being in India. 2 days later i met the dude in daytime. his name was Jurgen and he was playing a Dorian scale I think with g ding. (therefore sounding wicked when jamming with guitars). he seemed to know the makers and was tearing the lid off everyones heads when he got it out. He could tell i was aching to play, and for less then 3 minutes my fingers and palms got busy.
When I got home the web site i'd been directed to had a holding page up saying production for that year ad ceased. aaaarrggghhhh.
I was dreaming about it a lot but had given up when one day came across hang-music forum got the address and sent my hand written letter. That was last june.........................then on february 20th an envelope was sitting on the doormat. Bit of a shock at the jump in price, but hey............
now I'm playing the waiting game again for instruction on how to pay and when it'll be shipped, and then the wait for the Integral Hang..April? seems to be the general consensus.
Oh yeah, and my sleep patterns have become disturbed and riddled with hang dreams again, since I sent off the contract.
