Topic: In the Gentse Feesten, just half an hour ago.

The first time I ever saw (an most important, hear!) a hang was today, not even half an hour ago, in the city of Gent, in Belgium. And look at me now, already registering myself to this forum and looking for more information about this instrument.

These days is the "Gentse Feesten" the main yearly festivities of the city, where all kind of cultural activities, specially music, turns this little city upside down for ten days. Streets are full of people enjoying the great atmosphere, and all sorts of people also play on the streets. Not necessarily for the money, but as a way to contribute to this atmosphere. And there it was, that beautiful sound I couldn't recognize. In the center of a circle of people there was this guy, playing this UFO-shaped instrument I never had seen before. I was absolutely mesmerized by the sound. During a short two minutes break the guy took, I talked with him. May be he is even a member of this community? He is from Barcelona - Spain, like me, and he told me a bit about the hang, that it comes from Switzerland and that he had to go there to get his own. He told me also he taught himself to play, and he is obviously very talented.

I couldn't talk with him more than a minute, but hopefully I will see him again these days in the city. May be. What's for sure is that as soon as I saw and hear the instrument I knew I want one.
I'm not a musician, nor I play any instrument at all, but I love music. And if I ever felt an instrument was for me, this has been the hang.
After a little research I'm starting to realize that getting one is going to be harder than I thought, as apparently only one company in Switzerland makes them and there is a big demand and little supply. But any input or advise by members of this community about the process of getting one will be very welcome.

Also, if the guy I met today happens to read this, I want to thank him again for the nice music he brought today to this nice city.

Francesc.

Hi Francesc and welcome to the forum... you have indeed fallen in love with an instrument that will prove very hard for you to obtain.

One company makes them, called PANart in Switzerland, two people Felix and Sabina hammer away at steel all day to make Hang (pronounced Hong or similar). Alas the bookings for 2008 are already closed and the company has released information that they will not be producing any Hang for 2009... that doesn't however stop you from sending them a letter and getting yourself on the waiting list for a future Hang.

The only bit of advice I can offer you for now is to be patient and to not be tempted by auction sites like eBay where Hang are being sold for not only silly money ($5,000+ USD) but they are also difficult to tell whether they are in tune or not.... PANart have also informed the Hang community that they will not retune any Hang sold on eBay in a bif to keep after sales down to a reasonable price... mainly the price one person paid for their Hang should be the price another person pays for it.

These instruments cannot generally be tuned by anyone or any steel pan maker, they are more complex in their construction so a bad buy from eBay could cost you a lot of money.

The Hang has touched the heart and soul of a lot of people, most who come into contact with it do so through street performers or by chance on You Tube... lots of clips on You tube.

There is another Hang forum and website that dare I say is a little more active than this on the Hang talk, this is a great place to chill out though. the other forum is attached to a website called www.hang-music.com

There is a Hang weekend where people can come and learn more about this instrument as well as get a chance to play some too that I an a friend organise here in the UK www.hangoutuk.co.uk a nice chilled out weekend in the heart of Surrey, south England dedicated to the Hang and how other instruments work with it.

As a complete beginner to the Hang it takes very little time and effort to start getting some amazing sounds from the Hang and this is it's beauty, it's a complex instrument when you delve deeper but on the surface it'll take you very little effort to play beautiful music.

To send a letter to PANart their details can be found on this forum including a fax number should you so wish to send a letter that way too.

I hope you find your Hang one day... it may be a long wait of a year or 2 but it's well worth it.

Regards,

Kelly

Re: In the Gentse Feesten, just half an hour ago.

Hi Kelly!

Thanks a lot for the answer and for all the info. Indeed, I found PANart's address very easily here in the forum. I definitely will write them a letter and get myself in the waiting list. As a matter of fact, I just met today again in town the guy I was talking about (his name is Alex). He was again playing and everybody was stopping to ask him about the instrument. I went to have a beer with him, and he told me a bit about the situation of getting a hang nowadays. He was lucky, as he got his hang just in May this year, but he told me from now on is going to be a bit more difficult. It's a pity, but that won't stop me.

Thanks for the links, and thanks for the info about the Hang weekends! It's good to know because I most probably will move to the UK (London) for a few months to work on a project, so I will be able to come and visit you guys too.

Well, going to check those sites out right away.

Thanks again,

Francesc.
